In 1948, Peter joined the central organising committee for the Festival of Britain. Its stated goal was to provide ‘a tonic to the nation’ and re-ignite pride in national identity.
Having only recently graduated from Oxford, he was appointed Assistant to the Director of Exhibitions, charged with planning and programming on the South Bank. This new public space was intended to showcase principles of urban design that would influence post-war rebuilding across London. Peter went on to become the Western European representative for the Festival directing its continental roll-out.
Fast forward many years, he gifted the Museum of London his extensive archive, which subsequently became the backbone of their permanent collection on this important post-war event. As avid collector and key player in the steering committee, he took great pleasure in ensuring this important material remained in the public domain.
