In 1951 Peter authored and illustrated his first book Look Before you Elope, a collection of found "personals" (all genuine), from individuals, who, in his words "strip daily their feelings and failings". To be followed by Sexes and Sevens, a satirical pilgrimage through courtship and marriage.
Peter soon established an illustration practice with commissions for leading publishers including Cambridge University Press, The Design Council, The Arts Council, The British Institute of Management, AFNOR and Hachette. Illustrator of numerous guides to learning and professional development, his greatest joy lay in communicating concepts and information through illustration when words could not succeed as quickly or clearly.
