Designer, Illustrator, Writer, and Educator, Peter was also a leading Advocate for the international design profession. Passionate about each vocation, he fought any attempt to pigeonhole his career into one category.
Born in 1923, in Middlesborough, to English and French parents, he showed an early talent, receiving the 'Tiny Tots Order of Merit' for 'clever drawing', and remained self-taught as both illustrator and designer. Awarded a scholarship to University College, Oxford, he graduated with two degrees: in languages, and philosophy and politics. An unconventional background that became the driving force in his search for visual simplification. Given his sharp intellect, it is surprising perhaps that Peter is best remembered for his drawings. Fascinated by the relationship between words and images, he used humour to make an idea, however complex, accessible and memorable.
Peter was also a much-loved father and mentor. Cataloguing his body of work, I can almost smell his signature Petersen pipe, and see him caught in a moment of reflection in the workroom. As always, Rotring in hand, surrounded by boxes of Letraset and Indian ink bottles, the faintest aroma of Cow Gum in the air.
This site provides just a glimpse of a body of work that includes thousands of illustrations created over four decades.
